We are off the southeast coast of Greenland after a bumpy night that left me short on sleep, though nothing serious. The fog and mist have been with us most of the morning, softening the horizon, but the seas are calm compared with what many here say they have experienced in these waters. Yesterday the winds were above 20 knots; today they are a gentle 14. Ahead of us, perhaps a day and a half away on the west coast of Greenland, a low system is forming. We will see how it treats us when we get there.
For now, I am simply grateful for the good weather. The fog seems to be lifting a little, and I may take a cup of tea out to the deck to see what I can see... perhaps another whale. Yesterday’s sighting was brief but thrilling. There are seabirds everywhere, too. Yesterday I noticed tiny birds darting above the waves like swallows, impossibly small for this expanse of sea. I will have to ask my daughter, the birder in the family, what they might have been.
On board, the paperwork has been cleared. The end-of-month reports were all submitted on time. Now the focus is on ballast exchange and on cleaning hatches and decks so that everything is in order before we reach Canadian waters.
