The day began early for me, on the bridge at 04:30 just as the sun was rising. To starboard lay a small cluster of icebergs, five in all, their shapes shining in the first light. Later in the morning another iceberg drifted into view, and in between we passed a handful of fishing vessels.
The calm seas make it easy to spot anything surfacing, and I still hope to see more whales or dolphins. Yesterday brought a pod of eight dolphins, leaping and circling the ship, a bright gift in the grey waters.
It is Sunday, which means pancakes for breakfast and French fries for lunch, small traditions that brighten life at sea. Most of the crew have the day off, though the watch is always kept. An able seaman, the officer on duty, and one of our ice navigators stand their posts on the bridge, eyes scanning the horizon for small and large icebergs alike.
For now, the sea is steady, the air clear, and the rhythm of the day feels light. Happy Sunday indeed.
