Life at sea: day-to-day
It’s the day before I am scheduled to drive to Rotterdam with Herman, a Superintendent. He’s going to do a hull inspection and some checks on some other stuff. Super excited. It will be interesting to see how day-to-day life unfolds on a much, much bigger ship. Also, this time with professional sailors, and simply more people around. Part of me thinks it may not be so different from being on a sailboat.
After all, the ocean is vast, and we are small, no matter the size of the vessel.
There are a few differences I’m actually looking forward to. Not having to share the toilet with a bunch of guys. Having a toilet that flushes, rather than one that needs to be pumped, is a significant advantage. A proper shower. A gym where I can get in my daily 10K steps and keep up a simple fitness routine. And maybe, hopefully, some quiet corner indoors where I can sit and look out at the water.
The rhythm of the days will probably be quite similar: eating, sleeping, and working. And this is what I truly look forward to. Settling into that rhythm with quiet intention.
