Reflections: where I live

by

(Disclaimer: I get Upper Deck and Deck A mix up. The moment I leave the officers’ mess and go down the stairs, I am talking about the Upper Deck.)

In this episode, I take you on a tour of my home at sea, a five-deck structure at the stern of the vessel holding everything from the bridge to the galley, cabins, and laundry rooms. I start at my favourite spot, the bridge, with its sweeping views, watch rotations, and the focus of the officers on duty.

From there, we move down through the decks: past my cabin on C Deck, the crew’s laundry on B Deck, the mess rooms on A Deck, and out to the upper deck with its gym and changing rooms. Along the way, I share the details that make this place feel lived-in: the captain’s open curtain, the variety of sauces on every table, Crocs lined up outside the locker room, and the hum of the generators over morning tea at the stern.

Note: the structure that I am living in is called a Superstructure or accommodation part. The two arms that I refer to are called bridge wings, which sounds pretty poetic.
